Week 17 Fantasy Hockey Picks

February 15, 2015 – Heading into week 17 of the fantasy hockey season, you should be cleaning out your roster of any lackluster’s and making room for these up-and-comer’s.

It’s very important to make educated add/drop’s this late into the season because it could help help your post season fate.

Let’s take a look:

Anders Lee, New York Islanders (C, LW) – In the absence of one great player is the opportunity for someone else to shine. Apply this to Lee, because he’s playing strong hockey and making the most of his opportunity to fill the shoes of Kyle Okposo.

Lee currently has 28 total points on the season (18 goals, 10 assists), and eight in his last five games (three goals, five assists). He was also instrumental in the ‘Isles latest 6-3 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets, leading the way with four assists.

The 6’3, 227lb forward is on the first line between Jonathan Tavares and Josh Bailey. Lee makes for a strong late season pick up.

Kevin Hayes, New York Rangers (C, RW) – Hayes current level of play has potential to be something much more than just a kid on a hot streak.

The 6’5, 225lb rookie from Boston College has made strong contributions in his last five games with seven points (three goals, four assists). He has three goals in his last three games, two of which are something of beauty that make him stand out as someone who has a great future in the league. They’re goals that you’d be more likely to see out of a veteran NHL goal scorer, and not a 22-year-old rookie.

First, he had this end-to-end power move with a touch of finesse against the Colorado Avalanche — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1qtDA8tRig

Then, the next night, he had this beautiful shorthanded 2-on-1 goal against the Phoenix Coyotes — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoXF2Qyb_bI

The two-way forward has it all: he’s a threat to other teams on the penalty kill and power play, he’s a play maker who sees the ice well and gets assists; he has a scoring touch; size; speed; soft hands and also a physical mean streak.

Hayes has 25 points (10 goals, 15 assists) in 51 games this season.

Tyler Myers, Winnipeg Jets (D) – It might be the dawn of a new era for the newly acquired 6’8, 219lb defenseman, whom the Jets recently acquired from the NHL’s bottom-feeding Buffalo Sabres.

Myers will be expected to crunch big minutes for the playoff bound Jets. Paired up with high scoring defenseman, Tobias Enstrom, I would expect Myers to frequently find his way onto the score sheet.

Expect him to have a high plus/minus (for a change), and contribute to the following categories: goals, assists, shots on net and penalty minutes.

This is a guy who does not take a night off, get him before it’s too late.

Noteable mentions:

Drew Stafford, Winnipeg Jets (RW) – Stafford is another player who was acquired from the Buffalo Sabres along with Myers. Like Myers, Stafford’s career might be revitalized now that he’s playing alongside other talented players and is in an environment that has a winning mentality.

Stafford added a goal, the shootout winner and five shots in his first game against the Detroit Red Wings in which the Jets won 5-2.

He’s on the second line with Mathieu Perreault and Mark Scheifele – you might want to think about adding him to your roster.

Mayson Raymond, Calgary Flames (LW, RW) – Raymond is an inconsistent type; but when he’s on, he’s on. The winger has five goals and six points in his last five games. He could be worth picking up.

These are your Week 17 Fantasy Hockey Picks.
